DIY Painting Tip 11
Smart Payment Practices: Navigating Down Payments for Exterior and Interior Painting Contracts
If you're planning to hire a contractor for an exterior or interior painting project, it's important to exercise caution when it comes to the down payment. While some contractors may require a significant upfront payment, it's generally advisable not to provide one until the job commences. Instead, a deposit of around 10 to 15 percent is typically reasonable for both exterior and interior painting projects. This allows the contractor to purchase necessary materials and begin preparations without requiring a substantial sum upfront.
An alternative approach is to make payments in quarters as the work progresses. This ensures a fair payment schedule that aligns with the progress of the painting job. For example, you might provide a quarter of the total payment when the contractor completes the preparation work, another quarter when the primer is applied, a third quarter when the finish coat is applied, and the final quarter when the job is completed to your satisfaction.
Whichever approach you choose, it's important to discuss payment terms with your contractor before the job begins. Be sure to understand their policies and payment expectations, and get everything in writing to avoid any misunderstandings or disputes down the line. With careful planning and clear communication, you can ensure a successful painting project that meets your expectations and stays within your budget.
